Sword
Ahoy
If there was any lingering question about the potential of Cayman's
sword fishery, confirmation comes from a recent successful trip
by local boat captain Chris Briggs and angler Curtis White who,
in August 2009, landed a 205lb broadbill.
Leaving the dock at 3pm,
Chris headed 15 miles due north of Grand Cayman on his 36ft Contender
'Strike Force'. On a calm sea with virtually no wind, the team
dropped eight lines to varying depths, the deepest being 1500 feet.
At dusk, a surface bait was hit. The rig was a simple
one; a 2lb squid on 50lb test with no light, no float or weight.
The fish ran straight down for about 100 feet then broke the
surface for some showy tail-walking before sounding again.
After a good fight of some 90 minutes, the team
successfully boated the swordfish. The catch backs up the view
of a growing number of Cayman anglers that the species can be
caught readily in every quadrant of Cayman waters.
